• This event, organised by Feria de Valladolid and Spain Film Commission, increases by thirty percent the participation of filming destinations, location scouts, producers and companies from the sector.

The second edition of Shooting Locations Marketplace, the event for location scouts, producers, audio-visual industry service suppliers and shooting destinations, organised by Feria de Valladolid and Spain Film Commission and sponsored by Valladolid City Council, will hold its 2nd Edition on 20th and 21st October.

Figures for this edition point to a 30 percent growth over the previous year’s event. As Feria de Valladolid’s CEO explained, “the rise includes not just the destinations, but also the number of Spanish and international location scouts and production companies that will be taking part”.

Carlos Rosado, President of Spain Film Commission, stated “this year should see the consolidation of this project, whose first edition emerged as an extremely useful tool for production companies, as well as the network of film commissions and film offices”.

Alberto Alonso, General Director of Feria de Valladolid, explained that in this 2nd edition “the number of destinations as well as the number of both national and international participating locators and producers has increased”.

Carlos Rosado also highlighted that practically all the members of Spain Film Commission will be taking part – around thirty destinations throughout Spain, both on a regional and local scale.

Alberto Alonso mentioned the international vocation of this contract market, which has attracted destinations such as Norway, Malta, Jordan, Poland, the UK and the city of Abu Dhabi, in addition to Spain.

As for the presence of private companies, this year the list includes Paradores of Spain, THB Hotels, Seven Islands and Locafixer, two companies that provide support services for productions.

Shooting Locations Marketplace is designed to provide a meeting point for destinations and location scouts with common interests, and therefore organises a programme of previously arranged interviews, which will be getting underway with more than 700 professional meetings.

Location scouts from seven countries

The number of location scouts has also risen in comparison with last year’s event. This year, some 50 professionals from seven countries will be travelling to Feria de Valladolid. Seventy-six percent are international, the majority from the USA and the UK, two key markets in the audio-visual sector. They will be joined by representatives from Mexico, and the list also includes Germany, Canada, Italy and Spain.

“Two facts stand out in particular: just ten of these professionals attended the first edition; and this year will see more location scouts from production companies, a profile with a greater capacity when it comes to deciding where to shoot”, explained Alonso.

The list of projects these 50 participants have been involved in includes productions featuring names such as Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Olivia Wilde, Nicolas Cage and J.J. Abrams; studios and platforms including NBC Universal, Marvel, HBO, Disney, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Showtime; whilst among the movies and series they have selected locations for we can find Mission Impossible, The House of Dragon, Black Mirror, Demimonde, The Crown, Hustle, 30 Coins, Vampire Academy, Warrior Nun 2, Fast and Furious, and Bollywood productions, etc.

Talks and round table debates

Shooting Locations Marketplace is also intended as a forum for sharing knowledge, learning about success stories and analysing the challenges that lie ahead for the sector. In this sense, the programme includes a series of talks and round table debates that will get underway with a talk by the US location scout and NBC Universal producer, James Lin.

Following this, Norway, Abu Dhabi and Alex Scott will discuss the keys to growth as a shooting destination. Day one will end with a round table debate on international productions. Members of the table include the Chairman of Profilm, Fernando Victoria de Lecea; Agustín Atxa de Bilbao Vizcaya Film Commission and the British location scout Dan Connolly.

On Friday 21st, the spotlight will be turned on Malta, Salvador Yagüe, chief locations manager for the series ‘García’, produced by HBO, and Víctor Aertsen, from Madrid Film Office. The session will conclude with a conversation between Lori Balton, a US location scout whose career goes back more than thirty years, and Hindu producer Bobby Bedi, who has worked on productions such as the classic ‘Sandokan’, first released in the 1970s.

As a meeting point for professionals from the audio-visual world, Shooting Locations Marketplace has signed a collaboration agreement with the sector’s leading association and specialised communication media:

Valladolid City Council sponsors this event, which represents an opportunity to showcase the city to the international audio-visual industry. What’s more, Spain Film Commission has included Shooting Locations Marketplace in the action plan for the Spain Audio-visual HUB, which receives funding from the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

Visits to destinations

“Discovering new places, adding to my list of shooting options and contacting colleagues from other areas”, are the main motivations that drive location scouts to take part in Shooting Locations Marketplace. Following on from the “theory”, the trip will conclude with a series of visits to settings in Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Vigo, Pontevedra and Canary Islands.
