Lagoa: between the vineyards and the sea

Lagoa

The municipality of Lagoa, located in the heart of the Algarve, Portugal, is a destination that fascinates not only for its landscapes and its proximity to the sea but also for its rich history and cultural heritage.

Since prehistoric times, the region has been inhabited by various civilisations, each leaving its mark on the development and culture of Lagoa. The favourable combination of climate, soil, and the influence of the sea has favoured human settlement and agriculture, including vitiviniculture, since antiquity.

The marks of medieval history and the deep Islamic influence in the area are evident, despite the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1755 and pirate attacks throughout the centuries.

With the official creation of the municipality in 1773 by Royal Charter, Lagoa has grown and developed, maintaining its connection with agriculture and wine production. Today, extending across a diverse territory that encompasses several parishes, Lagoa stands out for its archaeological richness and its commitment to preserving its historical heritage.

Archaeological research has revealed significant sites that testify to the region’s long history, although much remains to be discovered and valued.

The enotourism proposal of Lagoa

At FINE #WineTourism Marketplace, which will be held on the 13th and 14th of March 2024, the municipality of Lagoa will present its exceptional enotourism proposal, an offer that invites you to discover the history and art of viticulture in this rich region of the Algarve.

Lagoa’s connection with viticulture dates back to ancient times when Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs cultivated vines and produced wine in these lands.

Over the centuries, the region has maintained a winemaking tradition that, combined with modernisation and the introduction of new technologies and grape varieties, has led to the production of wines of recognised quality both nationally and internationally.

The resurgence of viticulture in the region, with the support of the Algarve Regional Wine Commission and the introduction of new practices and varieties, has allowed Lagoa to position itself as a benchmark in wine production in the Algarve.

Other experiences in Lagoa

Beyond wine, Lagoa offers a rich diversity of experiences that complement its enotourism proposal.

The natural beauty of its coastal landscapes, dreamy beaches, and quality hotel offerings make Lagoa an exemplary tourist destination. However, Lagoa’s richness is not limited to its natural environment; its history, gastronomy, art, and traditions form a cultural mosaic that invites exploration.

The municipality of Lagoa is proud to participate in FINE #WineTourism Marketplace, where visitors will have the opportunity to get to know its enotourism proposal up close. Through visits to estates and wineries, wine tastings, and cultural experiences, Lagoa hopes to share the essence of its land and its people with the world.
