· Organised by Feria de Valladolid and the Spain Film Commission, it brings together location scouts, producers and destinations from around twenty countries

Shooting Locations Marketplace, the event for filming in the audiovisual industry,

is holding its fourth edition on 15 and 16 October at Feria de Valladolid. The event will bring together audiovisual industry professionals from 21 countries: location scouts, production companies, creative directors, filming destinations, ancillary services companies and sector associations.

Shooting Locations Marketplace is organised by Feria de Valladolid and Spain Film Commission and is sponsored by the Junta de Castilla y León and Valladolid City Council. The official opening was attended by the Director General of Cultural Policies, Inmaculada Martínez; the Councillor for Tourism, Events and City Brand, Blanca Jiménez; the acting Secretary General of Spain Film Commission, Juan Manuel Guimeráns, and the Director General of Feria de Valladolid, Alberto Alonso.

Shooting Locations Marketplace has doubled the international participation this year with 19 destinations, compared to nine in the previous edition. Likewise, the number of interviews set between ‘supply and demand’ has increased by 35 per cent. More than 1,300 meetings are scheduled, a figure which, according to Alberto Alonso, ‘corresponds exclusively to the pure contracting market, to which must be added the spontaneous meetings that take place throughout the day, because Shooting is conceived as a working framework with different scenarios’.

Alonso stated that ‘this is a better edition than the previous ones; with a wider, more diverse offer and, therefore, with greater possibilities for agreements to be formalised. There are 69 localisers, producers and creatives taking part, of which 49 are attending for the first time and, once again, the majority, around 70 percent, work in the two most important markets in the western world: the United States and Great Britain’. ‘At Shooting Locations Marketplace we talk about images, but its value lies in the word, in the face-to-face conversations that will take place during these two days at the Feria de Valladolid,’ he added.

The Director General of Cultural Policies of the Junta de Castilla y León, Inmaculada Martínez, referred to ‘the importance of promoting our region in order to continue attracting filming, hence the importance of participating in specialised events such as the Shooting Locations Marketplace. The Castilla y León Film Commission is a direct working tool to reach location scouts and producers with decision-making power when it comes to choosing where to shoot, and during these days it will meet with national and international professionals. In addition, our participation in this event is reinforced with the trip that ten professionals from the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Belgium will make to the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos, Soria and Segovia’.

The Councillor for Tourism, Events and City Branding of Valladolid City Council, Blanca Jiménez, stated that ‘this event not only sets us apart, but also puts us on the map of an increasingly important industry in the world and especially in our country. The audiovisual industry is part of a very promising future in territories like ours, which are committed to professionalising the sector, helping creators and offering all our potential to producers, localisers and all those who make decisions and who can see an opportunity in Valladolid. We are delighted that the Spain Film Commission continues to see this city as a strategic meeting point for so many professionals and destinations, and that the Feria de Valladolid continues to offer visitors unique experiences that position us at a very high level. The city council will continue to work so that this city has a lot to say in an industry of the future and that represents our past very well’.

From the Spain Film Commission, the acting secretary general, Juan Manuel Guimeráns, highlighted the importance of Shooting Locations Marketplaces for the association, “a project that was launched 4 years ago with a lot of ambition and uncertainty and that today has consolidated itself as the market of reference in the sector at European level’. A result that has been obtained thanks to ‘the collaboration with the Feria de Valladolid and the extraordinary response we are getting from both national and international Film Commissions”.

New additions

The increase in international participation in Shooting Locations Marketplace has been recorded among both locations and destinations, with the incorporation of the regions of Flanders, Tyrol, Central Macedonia, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Hessen, Saxony, New Aquitaine, Brittany, the cities of London, Vilnius, Cascais, Vienna, as well as thenational organisations of Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Portugal, Jordan, France, Egypt and Norway. The event is also being attended by ten companies providing filming services, six of which are Spanish and the remaining four are from Jordan, Estonia and two from Portugal. As for the Spanish destinations, Shooting Locations Marketplace brings together 33 members of Spain Film Commissions, who draw a map of origin from twelve autonomous communities. Alongside these destinations, there is also representation from the private sector, with two hotel chains promoting their establishments as filming locations.

Trips to explore Spain

The Shooting Locations Marketplace activity will continue beyond the 16th, with location scouts travelling to six destinations to learn about the scenarios to which they will take their projects in the future. Specifically, they will visit several provinces of Castilla y León, Bilbao, Ibiza, Andalusia, the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community. The host film commissions will show them buildings, natural spaces, coasts, infrastructures and recording studios.

Impact of filming in Spain

The economic impact of the incentives for international filming in Spain is estimated at almost €1.8 billion, according to the report presented by the Spain Film Commission, prepared by the consultancy Olsberg SPI, with the collaboration of Profilm. The report, which covers the period from 2019 to 2022, shows that the productions benefiting from the tax incentive programme, which was launched in 2015 and has been increasing ever since, have had a very significant impact on the economy. Specifically, the study reveals that every euro invested in tax incentives for international filming has generated a return of nine euros in the Spanish economy, highlighting the importance of maintaining and reinforcing this type of policy.
