This is Quinta do Sanguinhal´s wine and wine tourism tradition
Since its foundation in 1926 by Abel Pereira da Fonseca, Quinta do Sanguinhal has stood out as an innovator on the Portuguese wine scene. With the planting of the first extreme vines, aligned and without interspersed fruit trees, Pereira da Fonseca started a revolution in wine agriculture.
The introduction of new varieties and the planting of a talhão dedicated to experimentation, still known as “experiences”, demonstrates a legacy of curiosity and excellence.
This legacy extends beyond its wines, influencing wine tourism and leaving a cultural imprint on the region, marked by figures such as Fernando Pessoa and his habit of visiting the ‘Abel house’ to enjoy a good wine.
The quinta is made up of three estates that stand out not only for their wine production, but also for their rich history and cultural contribution.
Quinta do Sanguinhal, with its production of DOC Óbidos and IG Lisboa wines, and Quinta das Cerejeiras, producer of the renowned Quinta das Cerejeiras Grande Reserva, represent winemaking excellence. Meanwhile, Quinta de São Francisco, source of the region’s most awarded wines, reflects the Pereira da Fonseca family’s passion and dedication to viticulture.
The Wine Tourism experience at Quinta do Sanguinhal
The winery’s wine tourism proposal is an invitation to immerse yourself in more than a hundred years of winemaking history.
The focus is on offering a genuine and enriching experience, far from conventional tourist circuits. Visitors are welcomed by the Pereira da Fonseca family themselves and guided through the historic facilities of the estate, which include one of the oldest distilleries in the region and a monumental wine press with fuso and rod presses, witnesses of the wine-making past and present of the place.
The experiences do not stop there: the quinta offers exclusive tastings of its wines, walks through its 19th century gardens and visits to the old facilities that today house a museum nucleus.
Every detail is designed to connect the visitor with the rich heritage of Quinta do Sanguinhal and its natural environment, which is unique due to the influence of the microclimate of the Serra de Montejunto and the Atlantic.
The integration of history and modernity
At Quinta das Cerejeiras, the Pereira da Fonseca family has integrated history and modernity in a way that enchants all who visit. The house of Abel Pereira da Fonseca, designed by the architect Norte Junior, is a symbol of early 20th century Portuguese architecture. Meanwhile, the Capela Madre de Deus, with its history dating back to the 16th century, remains a cultural treasure, available for visitors to enjoy thanks to the generosity of the family.
Quinta do Sanguinhal not only celebrates its rich history and wine production, but also positions itself as an exceptional venue for corporate and social events.
With versatile facilities that can host everything from seminars to large celebrations, the quinta combines its winemaking heritage with hospitality and the ability to host memorable events.
