The golden mile of wine: wine tourism excellence in the province of Valladolid

The Provincial Council of Valladolid establishes itself as a reference in the world of wine tourism through its Golden Mile of Wine project. This initiative, which will be showcased at FINE 2025, highlights a territory with a unique winemaking tradition, recognised for its concentration of internationally prestigious wineries. With a firm commitment to excellence, sustainability, and internationalisation, this region positions itself as an unmissable destination for wine and culture lovers.
An incomparable winemaking legacy
The province of Valladolid has historically been an epicentre of wine production, with roots that go back centuries. This legacy was further consolidated in the 1980s with the creation of the Rueda (1980) and Ribera del Duero (1982) designations of origin, followed by Toro (1987), Cigales (1991), and Tierra de León (2007). These certifications have strengthened the quality and authenticity of the region’s wines, highlighting Valladolid as a fundamental pillar in Spanish oenology.
The Golden Mile of Wine, located along the Duero River between Tudela de Duero and Peñafiel, represents the pinnacle of this tradition. This enclave has been recognised for its concentration of elite wineries, which have successfully combined respect for tradition with the application of innovative techniques in wine production.

A First-Class Wine Tourism Offer
The development of wine tourism in the province of Valladolid is one of the Provincial Council’s strongest commitments. Through initiatives such as the Peñafiel Wine Museum, inaugurated 25 years ago, and the network of Wine Routes of Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Cigales, and Toro, the region has consolidated an attractive wine tourism offer.
Visitors can enjoy exclusive experiences, such as tastings led by expert sommeliers, visits to centuries-old wineries, stays in hotels located in monasteries, and dining in Michelin-starred restaurants. Additionally, the Wine Passport and the Wine Train, in collaboration with RENFE, facilitate access for travellers and reinforce the integration of wine tourism into the province’s tourist offer.
The harvest festivals, held in various municipalities such as Cigales, Rueda, and Peñafiel, are another major attraction, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the essence and effort behind each bottle of wine.
Innovation, Sustainability, and Excellence
The Golden Mile of Wine is distinguished not only by its history and quality but also by its commitment to innovation and sustainability. The Provincial Council of Valladolid constantly works on developing projects that promote responsible practices in wine production and marketing, respecting the environment and ensuring sustainable tourism.
Far from being just a complementary activity, wine tourism has become a key economic driver in the province. According to the Wine Tourism Observatory, the economic impact of wine tourism in Spain exceeded 102 million euros in 2023, with a growth of 25.16% compared to the previous year. In this context, Valladolid has positioned itself as a reference destination, contributing to the sector’s development and offering high-quality experiences to visitors.
