The Community of Madrid also has room for wine tourism

Madrid

The Community of Madrid, renowned for its vibrant urban life and cultural richness, also stands out as a top wine tourism destination. With a winemaking tradition that dates back centuries, the region has consolidated its position on the Spanish wine map, offering visitors a diverse and enriching wine tourism experience.

In 2025, the Community celebrates the “Year of Wine Tourism,” coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin (DOP) Vinos de Madrid, reaffirming its commitment to promoting its wines and wineries.

4 main zones

The DOP Vinos de Madrid, established in 1990, covers 70 municipalities and includes 51 wineries that produce around 110 wine brands across approximately 9,000 hectares of vineyards. The region is divided into four subzones, each with distinctive geographical and climatic characteristics that contribute to the uniqueness of their wines:

  • Arganda: comprising 30 municipalities and 22 wineries. Its white wines are fresh and fruity, while the reds are noted for their body and balance.
  • Navalcarnero: the smallest in area, includes 19 municipalities and 4 wineries. It is known for its rosé wines with aromatic intensity and fruity flavour.
  • San Martín de Valdeiglesias: covers 9 municipalities and 17 wineries. Produces young, tasty, and powerful rosé and red wines, as well as whites with pronounced personality.
  • El Molar: includes 11 municipalities and is the only subzone north of Madrid. Its climatic conditions and granite and slate soils give its grapes unique characteristics.

Among the cultivated grape varieties, the white Malvar and Albillo Real, and the red Garnacha Tinta stand out, enriching the region’s wine offerings with diversity.

Iconic wineries to visit

The Community of Madrid has developed a solid wine tourism infrastructure that invites visitors to immerse themselves in wine culture. Through the “Madrid Wine Routes” initiative, various experiences are offered that combine oenology, gastronomy, and cultural heritage.

The cultural wine itineraries allow visitors to explore the different subzones of the DOP, visiting iconic wineries such as:

  • Bodega Ecológica Andrés Morate: Founded in 1999, it is the first organic winery in the Community of Madrid, certified by the Committee of Organic Agriculture and the DOP Vinos de Madrid.
  • Vinícola de Arganda: Located just 25 kilometres from Puerta del Sol, it is the only winery and oil mill that produces, processes, and distributes its wine and oil.
  • Las Moradas de San Martín: Situated in the Sierra de Gredos, this winery was established in 1999 with the aim of recovering centuries-old vineyards of Garnacha and Albillo Real, producing wines with organic and biodynamic practices.

These visits offer the opportunity to learn about the winemaking process, from the vineyard to the glass, participating in tastings led by experts and enjoying pairings with local gastronomy.

Commitment to wine development

The Community of Madrid has shown a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability in the wine sector. In 2025, more than five million euros have been allocated to promote the region’s wine and wineries, as part of the Year of Wine Tourism mentioned at the beginning of the article.

Additionally, specific grants have been implemented to promote the wine sector in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, fostering rural development and the preservation of winemaking traditions.

The recent recovery of the Hebén grape, a variety believed to have disappeared for centuries, is an example of the effort to rescue and value the region’s winemaking heritage. This discovery, made by the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA), could further enrich the diversity of Vinos de Madrid.

The Community of Madrid presents itself as a leading wine tourism destination, where tradition and modernity intertwine to offer unique experiences. Its participation in the Valladolid Fair is an invitation to discover the richness of its wines, the passion of its winemakers, and the beauty of its wine landscapes. We encourage you to visit the Community of Madrid’s stand at the fair or explore their official website for more information and to plan your next wine tourism getaway.
