Real Cave do Cedro: tradition, innovation and wine tourism in the depths of Bairrada

In the vibrant setting of the International Wine Tourism Fair (FINE), Real Cave do Cedro stands out as a prominent example of Portuguese wine tourism. Founded in 1951 by the Aleixo family, this winery not only represents the rich winemaking tradition of the Bairrada region but also the evolution of a family legacy that has successfully combined authenticity, innovation, and hospitality.
Their participation in the FINE #WineTourism Marketplace offers a unique opportunity to discover the story behind each glass and the wine tourism experience that makes this winery a must-visit destination for wine lovers.
The Aleixo family legacy
The history of Real Cave do Cedro is intertwined with that of the Aleixo family, native winemakers who, over three generations, have perfected their art in producing distinctive wines. Since its founding, the winery has been dedicated to transforming native varieties, reflecting in each harvest the uniqueness of the Bairrada terroir. This territory, known for its Atlantic climate and clay-limestone soils, imparts a unique character to the wines, marked by freshness, balanced acidity, and ageing potential.
The winery has remained true to its roots, preserving traditional methods while adopting modern practices that ensure excellence. This balanced approach between past and present has allowed Real Cave do Cedro to stand out both nationally and internationally.

A sensory journey through time
Real Cave do Cedro has transformed its passion for wine into an immersive wine tourism experience. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the winery and its impressive 1,200 square metre underground cellar, where bottled wines from pre-2000 vintages and sparkling wines made sur lie since 1971 rest. This underground journey not only reveals the history of the winery but also the evolution of winemaking techniques through a small museum that displays old machinery, including some of the first equipment used in Portugal for the production of sparkling wines.
Tasting experiences are at the heart of the winery’s wine tourism offering. Visitors can taste certified wines from the Denomination of Controlled Origin (D.O.C.) Bairrada, sparkling wines, and wines from the Geographical Indication (I.G.) Beira-Atlântico. Among the gems available for tasting are the Aleixo Red Wine Grande Reserva 1997 and the Aleixo White Wine Superior 1996, two emblematic wines that reflect the winery’s mastery and longevity.
Experience wine in a ‘vertical’ way
The commitment to innovation is reflected in the Vertical Tasting Experiences, introduced in 2022. These vertical tastings allow visitors to explore the evolution of the winery’s wines, with vintages ranging from 1996 to 2020. This experience not only highlights the art of ageing but also the winery’s commitment to maintaining quality and authenticity at every stage of production.
Another distinctive aspect is the impressive stock of bottles from the last century, including wines from 1971 to 1998, a rarity in the wine world and a testament to the winery’s focus on preserving its legacy. This commitment to excellence has led Real Cave do Cedro to receive international recognition, such as the mention of “Best Still Portuguese Wine” awarded by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 2022.
