Madrid, a rising wine tourism destination

Turismo de Madrid

In recent years, the Community of Madrid has established itself as a leading wine tourism destination, offering a diverse range of experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in wine culture without leaving the region.

With the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Denomination of Origin Protection (DOP) Vinos de Madrid and the declaration of 2025 as the Year of Wine Tourism, Madrid reaffirms its position as a territory where tradition, innovation, and tourism come together to create unique experiences.

FINE #WineTourism Marketplace will be the perfect stage to explore Madrid’s wine tourism offerings, which combine winery visits with tours through distinctive vineyard landscapes, expert-led tastings, and a strong commitment to sustainability and rural development.

A winemaking heritage with a unique identity

Madrid is the only European capital with its own designation of origin, highlighting its winemaking tradition and the quality of its wines. The DOP Vinos de Madrid is divided into four distinct subzones: Arganda del Rey, Navalcarnero, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and El Molar, each with unique soils, microclimates, and native grape varieties that define their wines’ distinctive character.

With 44 registered wineries and nearly 6,000 hectares of vineyards, this denomination has positioned itself as a key player in Spain’s wine tourism sector, offering experiences that go far beyond simple wine tastings.

The recovery of native grape varieties such as malvar, albillo real, and garnacha tinta has played a crucial role in differentiating Madrid’s wines, which have gained recognition both nationally and internationally in recent decades.

This commitment to authenticity is evident in the wineries, many of which blend traditional techniques with innovative winemaking methods to create wines that faithfully express the essence of their land.

A wine tourism offering that goes beyond wine

Wine tourism in the Community of Madrid extends far beyond winery visits. Across its four subzones, visitors can enjoy experiences that integrate gastronomy, nature, and culture into a single journey.

From nighttime wine tastings under the stars at Las Moradas de San Martín to horseback vineyard tours at Bodega Andrés Morate, as well as family-friendly grape harvest workshops, the variety of activities caters to all types of visitors.

Madrid’s wine routes offer well-structured tours through the region’s key winemaking areas, featuring winery visits, local product tastings, and immersive nature experiences.

In San Martín de Valdeiglesias, for example, wine tourism is enhanced by the stunning landscapes of the Sierra Oeste, while in Navalcarnero, the town’s historic center adds cultural depth to the enological experiences.

Madrid also champions a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to wine tourism. Many wineries have adopted organic viticulture practices and produce certified organic wines, preserving both the environment and native grape varieties. The integration of digitalization and innovation into wine tourism has further diversified the offerings, with activities such as virtual tastings, immersive sensory experiences, and interactive vineyard tours.
