Arinzano, a thousand years of mystery and winemaking tradition

Bodegas Arinzano

Arínzano, a wine estate with more than a thousand years of history, is a place where mystery and tradition are intertwined in every corner of its lands.

Since 1055, when Sancho Fortuñones de Arínzano received these lands from King García Sánchez VI of Navarre, the estate has witnessed constant development in winemaking. The monks who initially settled here dedicated five centuries to the meticulous cultivation of the vine, forging the beginnings of an unbreakable winemaking tradition.

After the monastic era, Arínzano became home to noble families such as Lope de Eulate in 1520, who fortified the property with the Tower of Cabo de Armerías. The Marquis Zabalegui, another notable owner, continued the winemaking tradition of the property, building La Casona, a place of family rest and refuge after a day’s hunting. The church of San Martín de Tours, erected in the 19th century, still symbolises the importance of wine on the estate today.

The 20th century brought with it an era of large landowners, marked by the phylloxera crisis and the replanting of the estate under the direction of the Chivite family and the French oenologist Denis Dubourdieu. The winery, redesigned by the architect Rafael Moneo in 1997, is a symbol of the union between history and modernity.

In 2007, the winery was awarded the Vino de Pago appellation in recognition of the unique qualities of its terroir.
