Comissão Vitivinícola da Região de Lisboa: guardian of wine tradition and promoter of wine tourism

The Comissão Vitivinícola da Região de Lisboa (CVR Lisboa) stands as a key entity in the promotion and certification of wines from the Lisbon region. Their participation in FINE 2025 underscores their commitment to spreading the rich Portuguese wine heritage and promoting wine tourism in this region.
A Centuries-Old winemaking history
The Lisbon region, formerly known as Estremadura, boasts a winemaking tradition that dates back centuries. With a temperate climate influenced by the Atlantic, the region has been conducive to the cultivation of various grape varieties. CVR Lisboa, as a regional interprofessional association, is responsible for controlling the authenticity and promoting wine products with Designation of Origin and Geographical Indication from the region.
The region hosts nine Designations of Origin: Colares, Carcavelos, Bucelas, Alenquer, Arruda, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã, Óbidos, and Encostas d’Aire. Each of these subregions contributes unique characteristics to the wines produced, reflecting the geographical and climatic diversity of Lisbon.

Diverse experiences for visitors
The Lisbon region offers a wide range of wine tourism experiences that allow visitors to immerse themselves in wine culture. The Bucelas, Carcavelos, and Colares Wine Route is particularly notable, offering visits to estates and wineries, vineyard activities, and wine tastings paired with local cuisine.
- Bucelas: known for its white wines made primarily from the Arinto grape variety, Bucelas offers a rural landscape where you can visit the Wine and Vine Museum, as well as the Tapada Nacional de Mafra, a former royal hunting reserve.
- Carcavelos: famous for its fortified wines, this region combines winemaking tradition with beaches and fishing villages, highlighting the picturesque town of Cascais.
- Colares: located near Sintra, Colares is known for its vineyards planted in sandy soils and protected by cane fences, producing delicate red wines rich in tannins.
In addition to these routes, the region has various wineries offering unique experiences. For example, Quinta do Gradil, one of the oldest wine estates in the region, offers guided tours and tastings in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Montejunto Mountain Range.
Effort for the reputation of this beverage
CVR Lisboa plays a fundamental role in certifying the wines produced in the region, ensuring their quality and authenticity. The region has undergone significant restructuring in recent decades, focusing on planting noble grape varieties and adopting winemaking practices that prioritise quality over quantity. This effort has resulted in a notable improvement in the reputation of Lisbon wines, recognised for their excellent quality-to-price ratio.
The diversity of microclimates and soils in the region allows for the production of a wide range of wines, from aromatic and elegant reds to fresh and citrusy whites. This variety satisfies the most demanding palates and reflects the region’s commitment to excellence in winemaking.
