Quinta de São Luiz: the essence of the Douro at Sogevinus Fine Wines

Located on the south bank of the Douro River in the Tabuaço region, Quinta de São Luiz stands as one of the most representative wine enclaves of the region. Home to the premium wines of Sogevinus Fine Wines, it is also the home of the iconic Kopke brand, the oldest Port wine house, founded in 1638. Its historical legacy and commitment to winemaking excellence make Quinta de São Luiz a must-see destination for wine lovers visiting FINE #WineTourism Expo.
A vineyard with nearly 400 years of work
Before the Douro Valley was officially demarcated as a wine region, Kopke was already producing wines of exceptional quality. Quinta de São Luiz, the origin of this prestigious house, has witnessed significant changes over the centuries, from the construction of the Bagaúste dam to the acquisition of surrounding estates such as Mesquita (1972), Lobata (1974), Alegria (1982), and Galeira (1987).
Today, the estate covers 125 hectares, with 90 of them dedicated to vineyards that include century-old vines, used in the production of premium wines that have positioned Kopke as a leader in the production of Colheita Tawny Ports and Colheita white wines.

A sensory journey through the Quinta
Since its opening to the public in 2019, the Quinta de São Luiz visitor centre has offered travellers an immersion into the history and winemaking process of the region. During the tour, visitors can explore historic vineyards, learn about the production process of Port wine, and participate in exclusive tastings of still or fortified wines. Iconic places such as the Alambique House, the Chapel of Santa Quiteria, and the boutique winery provide an authentic insight into the Douro’s wine heritage.
The recent addition of The Vine House in 2022 expands the wine tourism offer with an immersive accommodation proposal. This boutique lodging, resulting from the restoration of a traditional family house, offers eleven rooms with panoramic views of the Douro River, six of them with private balconies overlooking the century-old Rumilã vineyard. A retreat where comfort and tradition converge for a unique experience.
Sustainability and excellence
Sogevinus Fine Wines’ commitment to sustainability and innovation is reflected in every corner of Quinta de São Luiz. Respect for winemaking tradition is combined with modern winemaking practices, such as the use of stainless steel vats and oak barrels for wine ageing. Preserving the Douro ecosystem, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a priority in all the estate’s activities.
In the culinary field, the opening of the Quinta São Luiz by Vítor de Oliveira restaurant in 2023 marks a milestone in the region’s culinary offering. Inspired by the flavours of the Douro, chef Vítor de Oliveira, with nearly 30 years of experience, offers a menu that pays homage to traditional cuisine with a contemporary approach. Dishes such as dried cod, octopus, DOP Barrosã beef, and Bísaro pork are examples of a menu designed to highlight the gastronomic richness of the valley.
