Casa Relvas: an experience in Portugal with African roots

Casa Relvas is a prominent family winery located in the heart of Alentejo, Portugal, renowned for its dedication to viticulture and commitment to sustainability. Their participation in FINE #WineTourism Marketplace underscores their relevance in the field of wine tourism and the quality of their wines.
A story written from Alentejo
Founded in 1997 by Alexandre Relvas, Casa Relvas was established at Herdade de São Miguel, near São Miguel de Machede, in Redondo. The Relvas family, with five generations dedicated to agriculture on two continents, found in Alentejo a landscape that evoked their African roots. This connection fuelled their passion for viticulture in a region with over 2,000 years of wine production history.
In 2001, the first 10 hectares of vineyard were planted at Herdade de São Miguel, followed by another 25 hectares the following year. In 2003, the winery was built with the capacity to vinify 500 tonnes of grapes, and in 2004, the first 26,000 bottles of red wine were launched on the market. Since then, production has grown significantly, reaching 6 million bottles annually, of which 70% are exported to more than 30 countries.

These tours culminate in wine tastings accompanied by local products such as Alentejo bread, olive oil, olives, and fried broad beans.
During the harvest season, Casa Relvas invites wine enthusiasts to participate in grape harvesting, offering a hands-on experience that includes manual picking, involvement in fermentation processes, and the traditional foot treading of grapes. This activity provides a unique perspective on the complete wine production cycle.
Sustainability and excellence as core concepts
The winery is distinguished by its focus on sustainability and social responsibility. Casa Relvas manages 350 hectares of vineyard and has implemented environmentally friendly agricultural practices, ensuring that every step in their wine production honours the land and promotes biodiversity.
