Cider and tourism, the perfect pairing proposed by Sagardoa

In the heart of the Basque Country, Sagardoa Route stands as an emblem of local culture and rural tourism. This tourist agency, born out of the Agrupación de Sidrerías del País Vasco, invites visitors to immerse themselves in a world where cider is not just a drink, but an integral part of Basque life and history.

Sagardoa Route begins its story in the apple orchards and farms, the cradle of Basque cider, offering an authentic and sustainable experience. Here, nature is not only a stage, but also a central character, preserved with respect and love. Visitors have the unique opportunity to meet those who work the land, learning about their lifestyles and philosophies, a personal connection that enriches every sip of cider.

The Gipuzkoa Cider Bar Association: professionalisation and passion

The Association of Natural Cider Producers of Gipuzkoa, based in Astigarraga, represents the dedication and effort to constantly improve the quality of cider.

Made up of 54 producers, this association focuses on two key objectives: to improve the image of cider among regular consumers and to expand its reach beyond the Basque borders.

The Association organises events throughout the year, including both national and international fairs. Its wine tourism proposal will be on display on 13 and 14 March during a new edition of the Fine #WineTourism Marketplace. Here, cider becomes an ambassador for the region, bringing its flavour and history to new audiences.

A unique experience beyond cider: tours and activities

The experience offered by Sagardoa Route transcends the simple enjoyment of cider; it is a palpable commitment to the preservation and celebration of the rich culture and pristine environment of the Basque Country.

This route is not only a window into the world of cider, but also a gateway to a deeper understanding of the Basque cultural and natural heritage. Through the various activities, an intimate connection with the territory is fostered. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history and architecture of the Basque farmhouses, places where time seems to have stood still and where every stone and beam tells a story of tradition and survival.

These old farmhouses not only bear witness to centuries of history, but are also the heart of Basque rural life, keeping alive the agricultural and fermentation techniques that have defined the region. In addition, the Corporation offers an exploration of the environmental impact and sustainability of cider production.

Visits to the apple orchards and talks with the producers provide a unique perspective on how conscious farming and sustainable practices are essential for the quality of the cider and the health of the local ecosystem. This approach not only improves the quality of the final product, but also ensures that future generations will be able to enjoy and participate in the cider tradition.

Basque culture, with its rich gastronomy, unique sports and traditional festivals, is inextricably intertwined with the experience that Sagardoa Route offers. The tours are more than just tastings; they are an immersion into everyday Basque life, where cider acts as a bridge between past and present, between nature and humanity. This cultural immersion extends to local arts and crafts, giving visitors the opportunity to see first-hand how traditional products such as Basque cheese are made or how sports such as Basque pelota are played.
